Here’s the latest … first of all another “self-designed” job on the left hand side … ready to tackle Africa, hopefully without being chased down by a lioness !

Secondly, we have yet another new route, but at least some fixed dates now. We are leaving for Egypt on the 23rd of September using the new Visemar Line ferry service from Venice in Italy to Alexandria, Egypt. It takes 4 days arriving on the 27th of September. It looks awesome and I have read of people who have used it before without any problems.

This means, with me skipping the bulk of Europe, I will leave London around the 21st of September to arrive in Venice, Italy on the 23rd in time for departure. So the new list of countries for me at least will be: UK, France, Italy, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, (maybe Rwanda), Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and then South Africa.

I plan to hopefully attend a wedding on the 11th of December in Hermanus, South Africa and then fly straight back to the UK to be back at work on the 13th of December … hope it all works out .. will have to wait and see !

My main source of updates for the trip will be via txt messages to twitter, so follow me on twitter for up to the minute updates while in Africa 😉

I recently went to South Africa for a holiday (photos here) where I rented a R1200GS for 2 weeks to travel around with. I have to say, the bike was very disappointing (for me at least).

It felt heavy, lazy and full of rattles and shakes. The most annoying thing was the centre console bouncing all over the place. At some stage my dad was driving in front of me in a car and he told me all he saw was a bouncing light. I then discovered this annoying centre console is attached to the headlight unit. I can’t believe people moan about the little “wobble” you get on the F800GS brake fluid reservoir compared to this R1200GS.

I did eventually drop the bike, came down quite hard over to the left and had to pay the rental company around R13000 (+/- £1000) in damages.

So, for me at least, the 1200GS is not the bike for me and probably never will be. The 800GS is so much better for me and much more fun !

Europe tripI have added a link to some photos of our Europe motorcycle trip in June this year. We left the UK on the 11th of June 2009, down to Folkstone and onto the Channel Tunnel to Calais.

The idea was to meet up with friends in Nice, France, but we ended up only staying for one night. The French motorway riding was not so much fun and very expensive, but we had to make up the miles.

We ended up in Nice 3 days later, the 14th of June and from there we returned via Italy, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium and back at home on the 18th of June.

It consisted mainly of camping, one night in a hotel in Calais, one night in Formula 1 hotel in Marseilles. We also camped at a petrol station somewhere in France for one night which was fun ..

It was my very first long distance motorcycle trip and it was awesome, hence the new found love for our ultimate, UK to Cape Town.
