We are now on the Visemar ferry, four days at sea, arriving at Alexandria, Egypt on Monday afternoon. Very kindly the crew on the ferry organized us a UK to Europe mains converter so that we can charge our laptops šŸ™‚

I have done quite a bit of riding the last 3 days, first day to Strasbourg and yesterday to Bergamo in Italy (where I stayed in quite a snazzy hotel). The ride yesterday was great, mixed motorway and non motorway, obviously non motorway riding providing the best scenery. I went through all this small little villages in Switzerland which was very beautiful.

As I say, I stayed in Bergamo last night, had a few beers as some of you who are following me on twitter would have noticed and then this morning I almost overslept again, but made it in time with just 200km of straight motorway riding to Venice.

I met up with Lindsay and Delilah (http://uk2za2010.blogspot.com) at the Visemar ferry port this morning, so now we are re-united for the trip down to Cape Town.

We also met a few other travellers, some on bikes, some with trucks and some with land cruisers, from German, Italian, British to some South Africans. There are also loads of rally cars and bikes onboard as well as some helicopters, assuming to film the rally in Egypt.

The check-in process was quite painless, but quite a wait, but in no time we were on the ship, only 50 or so passengers on the whole ferry … I also managed to organize my own 3 berth cabin šŸ˜‰

Food on the ferry is quite expensive as you can imagine, a beer is 5 euro and food for the 4 days are about 89 euro, but what can you do. The internet on the ferry is 7 euro per hour .. which is also expensive, but I reckon is not too bad for internet on the ocean. There is also mobile phone coverage, not sure how that works.

Next stop is Egypt … I hope I can keep this blog up to date, subject to internet availability, but I am planning to keep you all updated via twitter

Laters !

2 weeks today, I will already be halfway through France heading for the Italian border.

Today, I have received my last spares, Clutch cable, front sprocket, oil filter, brake pads, rear shock upper bolt, etc ..so that can be checked off my list. Thanks Motorworks

I have also went to the post office to get some cash (euros and dollars) as well as my International Driving Permit.

Tomorrow morning I am going for the Schengen visa (for France and Italy) and then all my visas are done.

Only 2 more weeks, can’t wait, need to sort out the last stuff, pack the panniers and what doesn’t go with me, needs to go to storage. Also need my final visit to the doctor for the last HepBĀ vaccination, then I am all set and ready to go …

Follow me on twitter, this will be the main means of updates during the trip and this blog will be updated whenever we get near to some form of internet access.

This post is more a mental note to self …. apparently it is very difficult to find the actual Visemar Line ferry in the mass of docks around Venice, so knowing it has to dock there on a Thursday (it departs Venice every Thursday), I went to the following site which tracks its real-time position and now I know where it docks which should be easy to find now, wallah !

Also made some slight changes to the website, above right corner, you can now see the Twitter and Youtube icons, to follow me if you wish – laters !

Europe tripI have added a link to some photos of our Europe motorcycle trip in June this year. We left the UK on the 11th of June 2009, down to Folkstone and onto the Channel Tunnel to Calais.

The idea was to meet up with friends in Nice, France, but we ended up only staying for one night. The French motorway riding was not so much fun and very expensive, but we had to make up the miles.

We ended up in Nice 3 days later, the 14th of June and from there we returned via Italy, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium and back at home on the 18th of June.

It consisted mainly of camping, one night in a hotel in Calais, one night in Formula 1 hotel in Marseilles. We also camped at a petrol station somewhere in France for one night which was fun ..

It was my very first long distance motorcycle trip and it was awesome, hence the new found love for our ultimate, UK to Cape Town.

Here is the link to the photos ..
